Hey there if you are reading this article then you’re most likely involved in one of our many design processes where clients provide feedback! InVision is a tool we use to present wireframes, mockups, prototypes, logos and so much more in a virtual artboard that allows interactive and annotated comments for seamless communication and productivity. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Open the InVision Board
The URL (this should be a link like: https://projects.invisionapp.com/boards/XYZ123) will either open to one screen with just one design OR show you an overview of your project’s multiple designs (depending on your project type and scope). In the above example is a screen of a website page design (on the left) and a logo round design (on the right). On the overview screen pictured above you would just click on the thumbnail of the images to open the preview screen where you’ll leave comments and provide feedback.
Step 2: Preview Screen
Once you’ve clicked into the preview screen (if your shared URL already didn’t open up to this page) you’ll see a screen that will give you a 2/3 view of the design image and a 1/3 column with the design title, colors used, and a text box to leave comments.
There are several icons in the sidebar that do different actions.
Download the Image
Use the download icon (the far right icon) to download the image you’re previewing.
Share the InVision Design
If you have permission you’ll also be able to click the share button (right of the download) to email or send the link to another team member.
To collapse the sidebar for a more fullscreen of the design you can click the right chevron arrow icon.
Close the Current Design
Click the X icon to close the current design screen you have open (applicable with mutiple images).
Resizing the Design/image Screen
If you click on the design/image on the left it will force the right sidebar to slide in giving you a larger screen to preview the design. From here you can now scroll and zoom into the design as you like.
Once you’ve collapsed the sidebar you’ll notice the ability to preview full-screen or scaled (scales the design to fit into your screen) at the top of the page – choose whichever option you like best (you can toggle between the two). To Note: these options do not affect the design but just the way it presents in your browser.
Step 3: Leaving Comments
Now that we’ve covered the basics let’s go over the most important feature of using InVision – leaving feedback in comments! What makes InVision so great is the ability to leave not just general comments but annotated ones as well.
Within the right sidebar once you click into the comments text box you can start typing and leave a general comment about the design. ( If it’s your first time leaving a comment it will prompt you to sign up – this is so you get notifications and replies for your comments to streamline communication and keep your team on track/up-to-date ). You can leave multiple comments so we suggest for each piece of feedback you create a separate comment by clicking ENTER or the POST COMMENT button.
For a short period of time you’ll be able to edit or delete your comment. A general comment will look like this in InVision:
Annotated comments are even better than general comments because they allow clients to give specific feedback about a particular part of the design by using interactive annotation marks to highlight.
To create an annotated comment simply click on the comment box again and click the CROSSHAIR ICON within the box:
If you’ve clicked the CROSSHAIR ICON it should now be highlighted pink and a tooltip above will notify you you’re adding an annotation. On the left side of the screen where the design is you’ll also notice the same messaging:
With the Annotations active now you can click anywhere with the design on the left to leave a comment on the part of the design you are going to critique. You may type your comment before or after you click on the targeted area as well- just make sure to hit ENTER or POST COMMENT when complete. Once you’ve posted your annotation you’ll notice it gets numbered so that the comments on the right are indexed by your annotations for clarity.
Annotated comments make every process easier since they provide a higher level of specificity to allow clients to communicate with designers easily! We hope you take advantage of this tool to provide helpful and insightful feedback!
- When writing comments avoid using “I don’t like this” or “I like this” – give more details, what don’t you like about it or what do you like, designers can’t use your likes/dislikes to improve a design they need helpful criticism to change the design to suit your preferences.
- When providing feedback on designs be as specific as possible as far as what you are looking for; if possible provide examples of work you like or elements you think could be incorporated.
- Be responsive – designing and redesigning can be a time-sensitive process if you have a feedback deadline be respectful of providing your comments on time so the designer can provide an updated design in a timely fashion.
